About this crossing
The Port Mann carries Highway 1 over the Fraser between Surrey and Coquitlam: ten lanes on the cable-stayed bridge that replaced the old arch in 2012, the widest crossing on the river and the one most of the Fraser Valley uses to reach Vancouver. Everyone calls it the Port Mann; the signs say Highway 1 and Trans-Canada. The pattern is a westbound queue from the 152nd Street and 160th approaches in the morning and an eastbound one from Brunette and Cape Horn through the afternoon and into the evening, and a crash anywhere on the deck backs both sides for miles. The alternates are the Riverview Bridge from New Westminster to Surrey and, for the south side, the Alex Fraser via Highway 91, both of which fill quickly when the Port Mann stops.
