This morning, British Columbia has a new government. The Conservatives have swept to a landslide majority, taking just over 48 per cent of the vote to the NDP's 37 and the Greens' 11. Nearly two million ballots were cast across 93 ridings, but turnout slipped under 50 per cent for the first time in at least a decade. The party ran the table in Surrey, winning all 10 seats there. Premier David Eby, who called this snap vote just two years into his term, quit as NDP leader within two hours of results coming in. Pollsters at Leger and 338Canada say they underestimated Conservative strength going in. The Greens held on with two seats, Emily Lowan in Saanich North and the Islands and Jeremy Valeriote in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky.

Interim leader Lorne Doerkson delivered the victory speech, marking the moment for the party. The result hands the Conservatives a strong mandate to govern British Columbia. Lorne Doerkson, who only took over the party's interim leadership on October 20th, is set to become premier. The Conservatives swept Surrey, Delta and Richmond along with northern and interior strongholds. David Eby resigned after his snap election call backfired. The Greens kept their two seats with Emily Lowan and Jeremy Valeriote. Paul Finch of the B.C. General Employees Union says no party was really ready for this election. Turnout looked to be under 50 per cent.
This morning, mourners gathered to say goodbye to Sergeant Morgan Wong. He was twenty-six years old, and had been training at CFB Wainwright to prepare for a second tour in Europe. At his funeral, his sister remembered him as brave and funny. Our thoughts are with his family and everyone who served alongside him.
David Eby announced Saturday evening that he's stepping down as NDP leader, less than two hours after the first results came in. He held onto his own seat in Vancouver-Point Grey. By 10:30 p.m. the Conservatives had won or were leading in 64 ridings to the NDP's 27. Eby said some of the province's hardest-working MLAs lost their seats despite their records serving their communities.
The NDP held onto eight of Vancouver's 12 ridings Saturday morning, but lost Vancouver-Langara, Vancouver-Fraserview and Vancouver-Yaletown to the Conservatives. Adrian Dix won his seventh term in Vancouver-Renfrew, and says calling the snap election was a mistake, one he says leader David Eby himself acknowledged before resigning. The Conservatives also kept Vancouver-Quilchena, with Carson Binda beating OneBC's Dallas Brodie. Former cabinet minister Christine Boyle, who held the housing and Indigenous relations files and Brenda Bailey, who stepped back as finance minister in August after revealing a cancer diagnosis, were both part of the outgoing NDP team. The party also lost longtime member Joan Phillip, who died last month at 74.
Conservatives have taken every single one of Surrey's ten seats in Saturday morning's provincial election, a big swing from two years ago when the NDP held four of them. In Guildford, Garry Thind unseated longtime NDP member Garry Begg by 1,464 votes, after Begg had scraped by with just 22 votes in 2024. Thind had also served over a decade as a Surrey school trustee, winning that race again just last week. Fleetwood's Jagrup Brar lost the seat he had held for 14 years. In Surrey City Centre, Zeeshan Wahla beat Amnah Shah by 382 votes, while in Surrey-Panorama, Bryan Tepper held on, beating Jinny Sims by a wide margin.
Conservatives also swept all eight Fraser Valley ridings in Saturday morning's B.C. election. Misty Van Popta took Langley-Walnut Grove with 55 per cent, and Jody Toor won Langley-Willowbrook with 52. Harman Bhangu claimed Langley-Abbotsford with 61 per cent, while Bruce Banman and Korky Neufeld won their Abbotsford seats with 63 and 62 per cent. Darryl Kropp picked up Abbotsford-Mission with 56 per cent, and Heather Maahs took Chilliwack-North with 59. In Chilliwack-Cultus Lake, Áʼa꞉líya Warbus won with 60 per cent, becoming the first Stó꞉lō person elected to the B.C. legislature.

Conservatives were ahead in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and the Tri-Cities as results came in Saturday evening. Lawrence Mok took Maple Ridge East with 53.6 per cent. Doug Morneau led Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows over NDP incumbent Lisa Beare, and Ryan Peterson was well ahead of Jodie Wickens in Coquitlam-Burke Mountain. Not every NDP seat fell. Jennifer Whiteside held New Westminster-Coquitlam, and Mike Farnworth was narrowly ahead in Port Coquitlam. David Eby has stepped down as NDP leader after the results became clear.
Saturday morning, Burnaby handed the Conservatives two seats, something that hasn't happened there since 1978. Newcomer Joshua Domnich beat NDP cabinet minister Anne Kang in Burnaby Centre with 47.5 per cent of the vote. Simon Chandler also knocked off NDP parliamentary secretary Janet Routledge. The NDP held on elsewhere in the city. Paul Choi won Burnaby South-Metrotown by just 66 votes, Rohini Reah Arora kept Burnaby East by 241 votes and veteran Raj Chouhan took Burnaby-New Westminster with 54 per cent.
