About this highway
Highway 1 from the Port Mann across Surrey and Langley to 264th Street, where the Fraser Valley properly begins. Locals call it the freeway or Highway 1; the signs say Trans-Canada. It was widened to six and eight lanes with the new Port Mann and it fills them: this is the commute the bridge was rebuilt for, westbound from Langley and Abbotsford in the morning and eastbound from Coquitlam and Burnaby through the afternoon and well into the evening. The interchanges at 200th and 232nd are the usual pinch points and the climb east of 216th is where a truck slows everything behind it. The alternates are Fraser Highway and the Langley Bypass, both of which run parallel and both of which are city streets with signals.
