About this highway

Highway 1 across the Fraser Valley, from 264th Street through Abbotsford and Chilliwack as far as Vedder Road. Everyone here says Highway 1 or the freeway; the signs say Trans-Canada. It is four lanes for most of the run with long straight sections and a lot of truck traffic bound for the Sumas border crossing and the Interior, so its problems are crashes and weather rather than volume, and fog off the river is a genuine factor most mornings from September on. The commute is westbound toward Langley and Surrey in the morning and eastbound home in the afternoon. There is no real alternate: Highway 7 on the north side of the river is a long detour by way of Mission and the Mission Bridge.
