About this highway
Highway 99 from Horseshoe Bay north through Lions Bay, Squamish and Whistler to Pemberton, rebuilt for the 2010 Games and still two lanes for long stretches with a rock face on one side and Howe Sound on the other. Everyone says the Sea-to-Sky; the signs say Highway 99. It has no alternate at all, which is the single fact that governs it: a crash at Lions Bay or an avalanche control closure above Porteau Cove stops the entire corridor and the queue has nowhere to go. Weekends invert the commute, northbound on Friday and Saturday morning and southbound on Sunday afternoon, and winter closures for avalanche control are scheduled rather than sudden and are worth planning around.
